The New Testament in the Greco-Roman World.
Studies Presented at the Seminar for Biblical Scholars (Pontifical Biblical Institute – Rome, 22-26 January 2024)
2025, pp. XII-581.
The studies presented at the Seminar for Biblical Scholars, held at the Pontifical Biblical Institute of Rome in January 2024, represent advances in New Testament research. Distinguished scholars who are engaged in interdisciplinary dialogue examine the Greco-Roman redactional context and intended audiences of New Testament texts, survey intersections between Roman and provincial legal frameworks and biblical frameworks, and evaluate New Testament literary genres and techniques within the early imperial literary context. Emphasizing sources often overlooked in New Testament exegesis, the authors integrate insights from archaeology, papyrology, epigraphy, sociology, literature, ancient law, and religious history. Grasping the cultural and historical milieu of the New Testament provides valuable perspectives for both biblical scholars and other specialists in ancient studies.
Paolo Costa is Professor of History and Exegesis of the New Testament at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and Research Fellow in Roman Law and Ancient Legal Systems at the University of Genoa. He has authored two monographs and numerous contributions on topics ranging from Roman public and private law to the exegetical analysis of New Testament texts, especially Luke-Acts.
